A new team of students start the 2010/11 International Master of Sport Management

On Friday 10th September 34 new students started the 1 year International Master of Sport Management (MISM). The “kick-off” for the Master was held at the Olympic Stadium in Amsterdam.

A diverse group of students

The diverse group of students come from seven different countries (including Bulgaria, Israel and Curaçao), are of varying ages, and range from different sporting and professional backgrounds. Whilst some may be athletes, some former athletes, and some are looking to switch to a career in the sports world, they all have one thing in common: a passion for sport.

Elite athletes

The group includes former professional athletes (including Barbara de Loor and Renate Groenewold), and active professional athletes such as hockey player Fieke Holman, biathlete Herbert Cool and volleyballer Roland Rademaker. Their decision to follow this Master fits perfectly with the vision of the Johan Cruyff Institute for Sport Studies: we believe that (former) athletes can often possess the qualities to lead sport organizations in the future, because they know what it takes to succeed in the sports world.

Management & Leadership

The students were welcomed by Ruud Polet, Director, Johan Cruyff Institute Amsterdam, before launching into the afternoons activities with Todd Beane, the Management & Leadership Module Professor. Following some “get-to-know-you” activities, the topic for the first session was "Managing Oneself". Todd challenged the students to think about what they would like to achieve in the coming academic year and in the future (see inspiration video "Leave a Legacy").

This Master will conclude in June 2011. It comprises six different modules covering the critical aspects of sport management, with the major assignment focussed on developing a business plan and presenting the plan to potential investors. It is a practically-oriented program enabling students to acquire the skills required to implement their knowledge in the sports world.

We wish success to all 2010/11 MISM students for the study year ahead!
